{"id":12,"date":"2018-08-31T11:07:07","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T18:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2018\/?p=12"},"modified":"2018-09-07T08:07:23","modified_gmt":"2018-09-07T15:07:23","slug":"aeronautical-library-special-collection-up-close","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2018\/aeronautical-library-special-collection-up-close\/","title":{"rendered":"Aeronautical Library Special Collection Up Close"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past two years, Bates alumni Bruce Worster \u201964, Walt Foley \u201969 and John Norin \u201990\/91 have worked to raise funds so that professional librarian Michael Palmer could work alongside Instructor of Aeronautics Emerita Iris Critchell to preserve the College\u2019s collection of aero history, which includes historic books, photographs and other items. Last year, they raised $67,000 to move Palmer from part time to full time, and this past December, Bates alumni and friends responded generously to a $50,000 matching gift challenge by Eileen SCR \u201967 and Jude Laspa \u201965, and Bruce and Susan Worster to raise $144,383 to continue supporting Palmer\u2019s work. This treasured Bates Library Collection is well on its way to being properly preserved and will remain readily accessible to students, faculty, aviation historians and enthusiasts well into the future.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few gems from the collection.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-153\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/09\/college-news-1.jpg\" alt=\"Items from collection. Described below.\" width=\"970\" height=\"851\" aria-describedby=\"description\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/09\/college-news-1.jpg 970w, https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/09\/college-news-1-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/09\/college-news-1-768x674.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol id=\"description\" aria-label=\"Descriptions of items in photo above.\">\n<li><strong>Does Compute.<\/strong> This computer was conceived, designed and produced by Richard Hartman \u201967 to perform flight computations, such as true airspeed and fuel consumption, among other information, and to be \u201crapidly available in the practical situations where the owner\u2019s manual is virtually useless.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bates Legacy.<\/strong> One of more than 5,000 photos in the collection, this image shows Isabel Bates by her plane at St. Etienne Airport, France. She established the Bates Foundation for Aeronautics and Flight Training program at HMC in 1962. The Bates Program provided flight instruction to hundreds of HMC students for 28 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Love in Space.<\/strong> This flight helmet was worn by physics\/Bates Aeronautics alumnus and NASA astronaut Stanley G. Love \u201987, best known for being a mission specialist on Space Shuttle flight STS-122 (2008).<\/li>\n<li><strong>History of Flight.<\/strong> A page from Danish author C.J.L.
