{"id":10,"date":"2019-08-30T08:56:25","date_gmt":"2019-08-30T15:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2019\/?p=10"},"modified":"2019-09-23T11:05:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-23T18:05:58","slug":"researching-for-an-answer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2019\/researching-for-an-answer\/","title":{"rendered":"(Re)Searching for an Answer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This summer, Stephen Adolph and his<\/strong> students sought to answer a question: How will the desert night lizard Xantusia vigilis respond in space and time to predicted climate change in California?<\/p>\n<p><em>Xantusia vigilis<\/em> are Southern California natives found mainly in the Mojave Desert, often beneath Joshua tree logs. The Stuart Mudd Professor of Biology has multiple published articles regarding temperature and its effects on lizard reproduction, growth and survival that have implications for how climate change may affect animal populations. With the help of his team, Adolph was able to further his understanding of how animals respond to thermal environmental change.<\/p>\n<p>Students spent the summer researching and creating predictive models of this lizard\u2019s geographical distribution with the help of GIS and other spatial statistical methods. With existing datasets, the team was able to look at what new predictions could be made for this species. \u201cWe are relying on datasets that researchers have collected for decades, centuries even, on this species,\u201d Adolph says. HMC researchers have access to over 6,000 records on the <em>Xantusia vigilis<\/em>, and the team used all applicable datasets to further the accuracy of their prediction models.<\/p>\n<p>Their goal was to learn more about <em>Xantusia vigilis<\/em>\u2019 natural population dynamics and determine what the distribution of the lizards may be in the future based on the temperature and rainfall characteristics of certain deserts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe find the entire set of climate conditions that are included everywhere these lizards are known to live and then find out if those climate conditions occur elsewhere,\u201d says Adolph. \u201cAre there similar precipitation and temperature conditions in other places where those lizards are not found?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-118\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/09\/Feature-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"Map showing distribution of suitable and not-suitable lizard habitats.\" width=\"528\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/09\/Feature-1-2.jpg 528w, https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/summer-2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/09\/Feature-1-2-264x300.jpg 264w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To answer this question, Kyra Clark \u201922, Sarah Halvorsen \u201921 and Daniel Furman \u201920 (University of Pennsylvania) worked 40 hours a week on multiple datasets along with reading and research in order to accurately predict population dynamics. They manipulated the format of each dataset to ensure uniformity\u2014i.e., all dates are recorded as month-day- year\u2014before they were able to move forward with their work. When dealing with the climate datasets, the students considered that not all cities have weather stations to record data, so the sets are just estimates.<\/p>\n<p>The students created multiple predictive models in order to determine which model produces the most accurate results, and they learned that each set is different. Some models are more lenient than others and produce different answers, because one may predict a larger geographical range for the species than another.<\/p>\n<p>The team found the relationship between <em>Xantusia vigilis<\/em> and precipitation to be intriguing the more they learned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing into this project, primary literature by Zweifel and Lowe showed that the lizard\u2019s birth rate was strongly and positively correlated with rainfall,\u201d says Sarah Halvorsen. \u201cHowever, as we\u2019ve been developing our niche models, we have found that <em>Xantusia<\/em>\u2019s presence is correlated with low rainfall.
